Struggling With Your Boss?
Help! My manager makes me anxious because I don’t know what they want from me.
Help! My boss expects things that are unreachable.
Help! I think my manager doesn’t like me or think I’m doing a good job.
These are questions I get from my community almost everyday.
Many of us feel anxious around our manager because we are unsure of their expectations. We may feel like we cannot meet their expectations, or that the manager does not like us, or our work.
Today Chip Conley, entrepreneur and NYT bestselling author, and me offer tips on how to manage a manager who makes you anxious.
First, ask yourself if you like your job and your current situation. If you want to stay put, here are some options to consider:
Talk to your boss. Prepare for the conversation and present the facts as you see them from your perspective. Ask for feedback and have a thoughtful conversation.
Reduce anxiety through clarity. Establish clear expectations and success metrics within a timeframe to reduce uncertainty.
Create your own boundaries. Protect yourself by creating positive or neutral self-talk and remember that you matter and your work is valuable.
We can't control other people. We can set ourselves up for success!
